Navigating the workforce element of technology transformation: A West Monroe client case study

West Monroe’s client was in the midst of a $600 million transformation and migrating their enterprise operating platform from on-prem only to run parallel instances in the cloud and on-prem concurrently. The company’s workforce had doubled over the past two years to accommodate the increased development needs and future uncertainty. They were unsure of the impact of the technology on their operations and organization.

They looked to West Monroe to develop a clear picture of what their future might look like and how they would adjust to their new operating paradigm and platform. They leveraged the support of West Monroe to determine the operating model, size, and structure for their organization. This allowed them to create structure around their workforce, allowing them to meet workforce goals, avoid continued expansion, and ensure their workforce would have the right skills to deliver on the business strategy.

Redesigning the organization for efficiency

West Monroe partnered with leaders in the business to determine the best operating model and organization structure by first clearly defining the vision for the organization. Subsequently, West Monroe established a baseline of employee and contingent labor data and leveraged Orgvue to manage nearly $320 million in annual labor costs over eight months.

Using Orgvue, West Monroe designed the organization in collaboration with leadership to reduce their people spend by nearly 30% and save an estimated $90 million per annum through organization structure and operational changes. This helped to reduce their development need, while they assessed and optimized their three lines of defense governance structure with the redefined organization and roles. This was supported by a pragmatic plan to achieve their goals and manage change throughout the project.

Implementing skills-based workforce planning

West Monroe also developed a strategic workforce planning process to help drive a cohesive workforce strategy. In this effort, West Monroe utilized Orgvue’s Competency Management survey capability to assess the skills employees had at different seniority levels for more than 35 distinct roles as defined by the organization’s business strategy.

This allowed the client to discover and quantify skill gaps and create highly targeted strategies to close those gaps through initiatives such as reskilling, hiring new talent, improving their technology or automating processes, and outsourcing work, as well as leveraging contingent labor to mitigate risk and eliminate single points of failure.

As a result of this work, the client now uses Orgvue to manage their workforce planning process.
